Melbourne’s Dota 2 community came together at GALA Esports in Box Hill on September 19–20, 2026 for the GALA Dota 2 Draft LAN, a two-day in-person tournament featuring six drafted teams, Swiss competition and Best-of-3 playoffs.
The event gave Victorian Dota 2 players the chance to move away from online matchmaking and compete face-to-face at one of Melbourne’s dedicated gaming venues.
Dota 2 Australia was also represented at the event, with D2AU founder Kyle Holton taking part in the tournament alongside other members of the Melbourne Dota 2 community.
A Melbourne Dota 2 LAN Built Around the Community
The GALA Dota 2 Draft LAN used a draft format rather than allowing players to simply enter as established five-player teams.
Players were divided across six drafted teams, creating new combinations and giving competitors the opportunity to play alongside people they might not normally team with.
That made the event more than simply another Dota 2 tournament.
For many players, it was also an opportunity to meet other members of the Australian Dota community in person, communicate directly with teammates and experience competitive Dota in a traditional LAN environment.
Day 1: Swiss Stage at GALA Esports Box Hill
The tournament began on Saturday, September 19, with player check-in starting at 9:30 AM.
Games officially began at 10:00 AM, with teams required to enter their match lobby by 10:15 AM or risk forfeiting the round.
Day 1 featured a Swiss tournament format with up to four rounds of Best-of-1 matches.
The six teams competed throughout the day, with pairings changing based on tournament performance.
After the Swiss rounds, the top four teams advanced to the Day 2 playoffs.
One of the more unique parts of the format was the planned tiebreaker.
If teams remained tied for the fourth and final playoff position after four rounds, the deciding match would be a 1v1 Shadow Fiend solo-mid game. It's difficult to imagine a more Dota way of deciding who reaches the playoffs.
Day 2: Best-of-3 Dota 2 Playoffs
The four qualifying teams returned to GALA Esports Box Hill on Sunday, September 20 for the playoff stage.
The tournament moved from short Best-of-1 Swiss matches into a single-elimination Best-of-3 playoff bracket.
The longer series gave teams more opportunity to adjust their drafts, strategies and approach between games.
A third-place playoff was also included, meaning all four teams qualifying from Day 1 had another series to play.

Why Melbourne Dota 2 LAN Events Matter
Australian Dota 2 is largely an online community. Players spend most of their time interacting through matchmaking, Discord servers, leagues and online tournaments.
LAN events provide something different. Sitting beside teammates changes communication considerably. Players can discuss drafts directly, react to fights together and meet opponents between matches.
For grassroots Australian esports communities, those interactions are important. Events don't necessarily need enormous prize pools or hundreds of competitors to have an impact.
Getting 30 Dota 2 players together in one Melbourne venue creates new connections between players and helps strengthen the local competitive scene.
Dota 2 at GALA Esports Box Hill
Located in Box Hill, GALA Esports provides Melbourne gamers with a dedicated venue for PC gaming, esports competition and community events.
The GALA Dota 2 Draft LAN demonstrated how gaming cafés can play an important role in Australia's grassroots esports ecosystem.
Rather than every tournament taking place online, venues like GALA give communities the infrastructure required to run local competitions and bring players together.
For Melbourne's Dota 2 community in particular, accessible LAN venues can create opportunities for more:
- Dota 2 LAN tournaments
- Community draft events
- Amateur competitions
- In-house events
- Dota 2 Australia community gatherings
- Grassroots esports tournaments
Supporting Grassroots Dota 2 in Australia
Dota 2 Australia has always been focused on providing opportunities for Australian players to compete, meet other players and stay connected with the local scene.
The GALA Draft LAN was another example of what can happen when Australian Dota moves away from Discord and matchmaking for a weekend and gets players into the same room.
Six teams competed. Four reached the playoffs. But the value of events like this extends beyond the final standings.
Players met new teammates, played competitive Dota face-to-face and contributed to another grassroots Dota 2 event in Melbourne.
Congratulations to everyone who competed and helped make the GALA Dota 2 Draft LAN possible. Hopefully, we'll see even more Dota 2 LAN events in Melbourne and across Australia in the future.
